What to expect from our appointments
Typically, there are three phases to psychological therapy. When you first make contact, we will arrange an initial call to arrange an appointment for phase 1 – the assessment phase.
Phase 1
In this phase, I will work with you to get a full understanding of the problems you’re experiencing and how you would like things to be different. Usually, but not always, this involves us working together to understand how you got to where you are today based on the different experiences you have had during your life. At the end of this phase we can discuss which type of treatment is best for the problems you’re facing and what the next steps could be.
Phase 2
The second phase, or treatment phase, is where we will work together to systematically address your concerns and reach the goals you identified during the assessment phase. Psychological therapy can feel like hard work as there are rarely quick fixes or magical solutions to our emotional difficulties, but my role is to guide and support you through this. Often during this phase, I will ask you to complete tasks between our appointments as this has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of treatment. We can discuss what works best for you and pace therapy in line with your needs and preferences.
Phase 3
During the third and final phase of therapy we might develop a plan, pulling together all the learning that has taken place to support you in the future.
Appointments are typically 50 minutes in length and held at the same time each week. There may be certain types of work that require 90 minute appointments with more or less frequency than weekly so I will work with you to tailor appointments to meet your needs and preferences. I offer both short and longer term work, in line with the recommendations made by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
